Tum Teav

Tum Teav – Adaptation by Uth Roeun

Based on the classic poem written in the colonial period, about the forbidden love between a former monk and a woman chosen to be the king’s concubine.

From the first sight, Tum, the monk, was in love with Teav, a very beautiful young lady. Teav offered Tum some betel nut and a blanket as evidence of the feelings she had for Tum. Tum was very pleased to accept the offers, to see she felt the same way he did.
Tum and Pich, his friend, went back to the pagoda. From the day he met Teav, he thought of her all the time. The feeling grew stronger and eventually he persuaded Pich to quit monkhood. Both of them then went to the chief monk and told them their intention. It was fine for Pich to leave, but the chief of the monks could forsee that Tum would have bad luck if he quit being a monk. He warned Tum about this, but Tum was blind with love. He decided to quit monkhood by himself in the forest.
